Gabriela Irigoyen is a visual artist, designer, and educator. Since 2004, she has been dedicated to creating books with an artistic and experimental approach. With works published in Brazil and abroad, she has taken part in solo and group exhibitions in cities such as Lima, Barcelona, Mexico City, Paris, Guayaquil, Recife, Brasília, Les Baux-de-Provence, Teresópolis, and Rio de Janeiro.
Her work has been featured three times at the Federal Justice Cultural Center (CCJF) in Rio de Janeiro: in February 2012 with the solo exhibition Amor de Livros (A Love of Books); in 2015 with Múltiplos de Dois, alongside artist and designer Cláudio Gil; and in 2017 with Livros Reais Imaginados (Real Imagined Books), curated by artist Ana Miguel. Her project LivroPoema/PoemaLivro was selected in 2025 through CCJF’s open call for exhibitions and is scheduled to open on November 26.
Over the years, she has led workshops and given lectures on books at several universities and educational institutions in Brazil and abroad, including ESDI-UERJ, ESPM-Rio, Centro Universitário Belas Artes de São Paulo, PUC-PR, UFF, UFRJ, IED-Rio, PUC-Rio, and UCAM. Internationally, she has taught at Universidad Católica Boliviana San Pablo (La Paz, 2017), Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola (Lima, 2018), and Universidad Casa Grande (Guayaquil, 2019). She was also a featured artist and guest speaker at the Bienal de Diseño y Cartel Bolivia (BiCeBé) in 2015, 2017, and 2021, and facilitated the international workshop Le livre comme un objet d’art et design in 2014 and 2020 at École Intuit-Lab in Paris.
Since October 2017, she has been part of GEL – Book Studies Group: design, authorship, and independent publishing (UFU). In 2021, she founded her own independent press focused on the self-publication of artist’s books in special, hand-bound editions.* The following year, she was selected for the virtual edition of Feira Miolos and took part in the exhibition Livros Multiformes, curated by Luise Weiss and Fabiana Grassano at the Cesar Lattes Central Library (Unicamp). That same year, she entered the Graduate Program in Design at the School of Fine Arts of UFRJ, where she became a member of the research group Design, Art, and Life – Studies and Poetics, and held a CAPES scholarship until December 2024.
In 2023, she presented eleven artist’s books in the group exhibition En Écho at the Yves Brayer Museum (Les Baux-de-Provence, France) and participated in Livros Notáveis (Notable Books) at the Rare Books Library of Unicamp. Between December 2023 and March 2024, she took part in the IX Biennial of the School of Fine Arts at UFRJ, held at the Paço Imperial Museum in Rio de Janeiro. That same year, the biennial became itinerant and was brought to Teresópolis, at the Centro Cultural Feso Pro Arte. Also in 2024, she was one of the guest artists at FliLa – Laranjeiras Literary Festival, where she performed Me conta uma história (Tell Me a Story).
In December 2024, she completed her master’s degree in the Graduate Program in Design at EBA-UFRJ, with a dissertation entitled The Book (as Artist’s Book) in Its Poetic Dimension.
*Her independent press is a platform for self-publishing that allows full creative freedom to explore the structure of the book through artistic, experimental, and poetic approaches. It draws on her research into finishes, bindings, and techniques to create books with a distinctly feminine theme and voice. These books subvert the logic of traditional bookbinding by inverting covers and contents, disrupting text structures, and innovating in folds, stitching, and assembly. The press aims to offer a sensory and visual experience to the reader-viewer—an invitation to see the book beyond its conventional form and expected function. The works incorporate drawing, watercolor, photography, collage, assemblage, calligraphy, stitching, and experimental printing, showing that a book-object can be transformed into poetry.

Desde outubro de 2017, integra o GEL – Grupo de Estudos do Livro: design, autoria e livro independente (UFU). Em 2021, criou sua editora independente para autopublicação de livros de artista com edições especiais, encadernadas manualmente.* No ano seguinte, foi selecionada para a Feira Miolos (versão virtual) e participou da exposição Livros Multiformes, com curadoria de Luise Weiss e Fabiana Grassano, na Biblioteca Central Cesar Lattes (Unicamp). No mesmo ano, ingressou no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Design da Escola de Belas Artes da UFRJ, tornando-se membro do grupo de pesquisa Design, Arte e Vida – Estudos e Poéticas e bolsista da Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) até dezembro de 2024
Em 2023, apresentou onze livros de artista na exposição coletiva En Écho, no Museu Yves Brayer (Les Baux-de-Provence, França), e participou de Livros Notáveis, na Biblioteca de Obras Raras da Unicamp. Entre dezembro de 2023 e março de 2024, integrou a IX Bienal da Escola de Belas Artes da UFRJ, no Museu do Paço Imperial (Rio de Janeiro). No mesmo ano, a Bienal tornou-se itinerante e foi levada a Teresópolis, no Centro Cultural Feso Pro Arte. Também em 2024, foi uma das artistas convidadas da FliLa – Festa Literária de Laranjeiras, onde realizou a performance Me conta uma história.
Em dezembro de 2024, defendeu sua dissertação de mestrado no PPGD/EBA-UFRJ, intitulada O livro (de artista) em sua dimensão poética.
*A editora é uma oportunidade para auto publicação e para ter toda a liberdade para brincar com a estrutura dos livros, utilizando suas pesquisas por acabamentos, costuras e técnicas para trazer uma abordagem artística, experimental e poética na criação de livros. São livros com uma temática e abordagem feminina; que subvertem a lógica da encadernação tradicional ao inverter capas, miolos; mexem com a estrutura dos textos e inovam nas costuras, dobras e encaixes. A editora tem o objetivo de oferecer uma experiência sensorial e visual ao espectador. É um convite para ver o livro além da sua forma e do seu uso esperado e conhecido.
